Unit 8

Unit Title: Earth and Space
Unit Time Frame: 2-3 Weeks

Unit Overview
In this unit students will investigate:
- differences between planetary days and years
- causes of seafloor spreading and magnetic reversal
- causes of seasons.

Essential Learning
How does the relative position of the sun to the
planets impact astronomical events and
daily occurrences?

What are some ways to detect magnetism?

Key Concepts
Identify and model the causes of night and day.

Compare and contrast Earth's day to those of
other planets in our solar system.

Identify and model the cause of planetary years.

Compare and contrast Earth's year to those
of other planets in our solar system.

Identify and model the causes of seasons.

Demonstrate that Earth has a magnetic field
that is detectible at the surface with a compass.

Compare and contrast Earth's magnetic field to
those of natural or human-made magnets with
North/South poles and lines of force.

Analyze evidence of sea floor spreading, including
magnetic reversal, molten material, and drilling
samples.

Research ways in which people have used
compasses.
